From small gardens behind our houses to larger commercial operations, many of us living here have some type of connection to growing food. Understanding that food is medicine, we thought it would be fun to grow kale and lettuces in planters and a small raised bed on the side of the pharmacy in 2016. South Side Drug Co. first opened its doors in 1919, just five blocks south of Springfield’s downtown square and county courthouse. At the time, people thought it was too risky to open a pharmacy so far out of town. As it turns out, the building’s location turned out to be just fine as it was next to the railroad and directly across the street from the city’s train depot, where passengers would come and go. One hundred years later, South Side is in its original building and thankful to be part of, work alongside, and serve the great community of Springfield and Robertson County, Tennessee.
