Our Story

From a time when customers rode their horses to the pharmacy or were passing through the Springfield train depot, South Side Drug Co. was here and remains today, ready to serve its customers with care, friendly service, and a warm smile. Through the years, community support, a dedicated and hard working staff, and consistency in ownership have been vital to the pharmacy’s longevity. The Maxwell Family (James L. Maxwell 1926-1961 and Jimmy Maxwell 1961-1973) owned and operated the business for nearly 50 years.

In 1973, Don Sloan bought the pharmacy with the help of his father-in-law cosigning the loan to secure the purchase; Don tells this story with a smile when thinking of his father-in-law talking to the banker about the rate of the loan, “my, that’s higher than a cat’s back!” Don and his wife, Susie, went right to work. There were times when he would be the only person there. If he needed to make a delivery, he would lock the pharmacy, run to someone’s house and return. His focus was on doing the little things well and consistently; taking care of folks the right way over and over. The pharmacy staff has followed his lead and through the years the business has employed friends and family alike. Kim Bibb joined the pharmacy in 2004 as Don notes, “one of the best business decisions I have made.” Kim, who earlier owned Clinard Drugs in Springfield, brings enormous compassion and a teacher’s heart to the pharmacy each day.

Today, the pharmacy is owned by Don, his son Drew, and Ian Bradley. Ian likes to say “the only thing older than our building is the number of years of pharmacist experience we have.” Ian’s background in pharmacy began at Springfield Drugs, where he worked for 17 years doing everything from delivering prescriptions as a teenager to working as a full time pharmacist after graduating from Lipscomb University College of Pharmacy. Drew’s introduction to the pharmacy started early, where he took naps on the pharmacy floor as a toddler, cleaned and organized shelves as an 8th grader, and delivered prescriptions starting at the age of 15 with his aunt or grandfather riding along. Drew graduated from pharmacy school at the University of Tennessee in Memphis.

In one hundred years of business, our walls have just about seen it all. From fishing tackle and paint, comic books, Kodak development, Cabbage Patch dolls in the 1980’s, cosmetics and perfumes, roasted peanuts and milkshakes, horehound candy, and hundreds of downtown parades to consultations, countless phone calls and face to face conversations, it is our pleasure to open our doors each day and serve you. We are thankful for an incredible community and proud to call Springfield and Robertson County our home. We look forward to seeing you soon.
